From a castle to a prison

Castle-Palace to the Dukes of Anjou during the 14th and 15th Centuries, the Château de Saumur, which was home to King René of Anjou, is the only remaining example of a princely palace erected by the Valois dynasty. Residence of the city governors, a prison, then a warehouse for arsenal and ammunition, it was purchased by the city in 1906 to house the municipal museum, presently Musée de France.
